I am bidding on a beautiful Atomic on Ebay -- item number 200107390623 -
Not sure if it is OK to mention it here.
I figure any additional bidders can only push the price higher.
Frederick insisted that I go after this unit with gusto.

There is something fishy about EBay and some of the processes involved.
I was watching another auction concurrently from AUS that was an obvious fake.
Frederick and I approached the seller and his reply was:
"Kiss my ass..."
Nice.
I bid 170$ on the Canadian auction and overnight it
went up to 360$ on anonymous bids...
Anonymous bids? What is that all about?
Is that the owner bidding up his own item?
I dunno.
I have yet to buy an ebay item because virtually
all the items on Ebay are artificially high driven
up people people with little sense of value and
little comprehension of reality.
This theory of mine was pressed home when a gal
checked in with me after she bought an immaculate Atomic at a local Value Village... for $15.
Now I am not saying that ATOMIC coffee makers are NOT worth 300 or 400$.
I am saying that there is a total air of
artificiality about items like these.
The price is high because of the absurd behavior of Atomic owners that feel that they are the cat's patoot.
My 2-cents worth.

Yup, I am not a huge fan of eBay either. Decent for car parts though!!
I am pretty new to eBay myself. Mainly got into it because I bought a car. I've noticed some crazy bidding on eBay, especially for the Atomic. I saw a new black knob go for $US 30-40. I think that’s crazy because you can buy one from Sydney for AU$24. I think eBay creates its own crazy supply and demand.
I find the best way to approach things on eBay, is to watch items with patience and bid within the last hour or so if it's worth it. Then again I have watched a lot of items go by without even bidding at all. In the end it never seems worth it!!
But, still look around for the Atomic. It’s a nice item to have!!

I think that online auctions profit from people's addictive behavior in exactly the same way that casinos do. Ebay compounds the problem by sending bidders notices saying "You're winning!" or "You're losing! Don't let this get away - bid higher!". Imagine the wrecked families and squandered savings the next time you're outbid. There but for the grace of God...

Well, this one is a first frother. The main black knob and the frothing knob are identical. The inside seals though for the frother are different than the later ones. It precedes the frothing Sassoon
I am possessed by two of these and I consider them to be the apex of the design evolution. During the same period THREE different ATOMICS were offered, a 1-2 cup with small jug, the regular common one without the frother and this one. Giordanno must have been able to afford his Renoir that two witnesses claim to have seen in his living room.
The frothing tip has four holes, the last ones only had two. The Sassoon had six.
This one has the perfect thickness for an excellent brew, whereas the Sassoon has thinner walls and heats up too fast. The coffee is a little watery.
Last but not least, the available knobs are a perfect fit. A purist could have it undercut to match the original. This was done so that it would dissipate heat fast and not crack. Seems that it doesn't work that well....unless the guilty owner let the machine stand on the stove too long after brewing. All in all, a good machine, the handle can be repaired with epoxy dyed black and smoothed over once set with extra fine sand paper.

yep....another first frother with the wonderful 4 hole frothing tip. This one has the original undercut filling hole knob. A new one is a direct fit. There is manufacturer that can supply a perfect reproduction for the missing jug in the for sale section in this forum !
