Replacement for Toshiba MyCafe - 2007/12/22 11:56 The Toshiba MyCafe thread has been read more than 30,000 times. Quite staggering actually. But it is a testament to how popular this brewer was when it emerged in the eighties.
And unless you know the whole story, a U.S. trade sanction was the partial undoing of the MyCafe.
Toshiba, as we all know, is a big electronics manufacturer. They made and make everything... anything to do with electronics.
Well, according to the U.S. Government, Toshiba sold electronic components to a country that was not a friend of the U.S.A.
As a result, the U.S. slapped some punitive damages on Toshiba -- and not wanting to restrict the flow of VCRs and TV's into the U.S. (considering the U.S. does not make TV's or VCR's!) they went after some kitchen appliances - and one of them was the Toshiba MyCafe. I will leave the explanation of this odd move to some of our more hawkish American readers.
Long story short: The MyCafe was a pretty amazing little coffee maker -- and there was parts support (in the U.S. of all places, well into the 90's...)
Now many of these MyCafe's are dying of old age - as things do. Now I am getting requests for new ones (of which there are none) or suitable and similarly robust replacements.
I have done a quick search this morning (and I knew this unit was out there) and came up with the
Cuisinart Grind and Brew... There are no consumer reviews and I have no idea how well it performs.
Has anyone out there tried one of these units?
The downside: The grinder in the unit is a blade grinder.
