Secondhand Gaggia classic or evolution - 2007/04/26 05:40
I would like an opinion on buying a secondhand Classic or a secondhand Evolution. (As a gift for somebody)
They both have the same price (75,- euros or $98,-) but the Classic is older (has been serviced) and is black plastic in stead of chrome or brushed steel (how old can it be?). The Evolution is almost new. Technically they seem the same, except for the Classic coffee has a solenoid valve and the Evolution a "normal valve" (what is the difference?).
Thanks in advance.

The Gaggia Classic in plastic? Huh? There is something wrong with this picture. Where are you checking in from? They could be knock-off's from India or China. The new or re-conditioned Gaggia Classic with 3-way solenoid is 5 to 7 hundred dollars (US) 400 EU or more.
If you explore this website for a few minutes you will find that the 3-way solenoid performs a valuable service in making espresso - I am not going to explain it here because I end up repeating myself over and over again with the same answers.
Yes - the Gaggia Evolution is almost brand new -- at about 275-->300 EU.
I would be very suspect of such cheap prices.

Hey, thanks for the reply. The mentioned machines are cheaper over here in the Netherlands. New, the Evolution costs around Eur 180,- and the Classic Eur 280,-, on the internet (trustworthy price comparison site). That is a lot less!
Here is a link to the black, maybe plastic, Classic (Dutch eBay-like site, scroll down to see large pictures):
http://www.marktplaats.nl/index.php?url=http%3A//elektronica.marktplaats.nl/koffiemachines-en-
espresso-apparaten/84829227-gaggia-classic-coffee.html%3Fxref%3D1
It looks exactly like my own. Except for the black color (plastic, my own is stainless steel) and the blue/red emblem. Could this be an indian/chinese ripoff?
The relatively low secondhand prices are common over here for the classic, and other gaggia's. They rarely ask more then Eur 100,- for it. Give a shout when I have to export some! Just joking...
Looking forward to your opinion.
