Aroma vs SL70 - 2005/12/07 00:10 I'm about to purchase a new manual espresso maker and a grinder and -- given my modest budget -- have narrowed my choices to the Saeco Aroma or the Solis SL70 espresso machines and the Solis Maestro or the Saeco MC2002 grinders.

Both grinders fit my budget (although I'm leaning toward the Solis because users can grind coffee directly into a portafilter), so I'm wondering if there are any problems readers might have encountered with the Solis or the Saeco grinder? Should either one of these grinders be avoided (especially when mated with the Solis SL70 or Saeco Aroma espresso machines)?

I like the look of the Saeco espresso machine more than the Solis so am leaning toward the former. However, I've had no luck finding out what materials the Saeco uses for its brew group and portafilter. From what I can gather, the Solis has the 'old' Saeco brass boiler, plus a chromed brass brew group and portafilter. The Saeco has a 'newer' stainless boiler, but I don't know what material is used for the brew group and portafilter. I'm probably just being picky, but I want to avoid forged aluminum parts if at all possible. Can anyone tell me what materials are used in the Saeco Aroma brew group and portafilter? Does anyone have a sense of which machine will be more durable?

I'd be grateful for any other comments people might have regarding possible espresso maker/grinder combinations in my budget of approximately $550 plus tax.

Thanks, Lawrie

Re:Aroma vs SL70 - 2005/12/07 11:58 I tend to lean in the direction of the Solis myself:

8 ounce Marine brass boiler - plated brass portafilter.
OPTION of non-pressurized portafilters (via Baratza or
QCS Burnaby).

The Saeco, I believe, is an all-steel affair. I do not think
that there is much aluminum in it.
Keep in mind: Aluminum is NOT a health issue any more.
It has been completely discounted by the medical
and scientific community.

Still - I prefer Brass for its heat retaining edge over steel.

Re:Aroma vs SL70 - 2005/12/07 14:43 Thanks Colin. That info is quite helpful. I was more concerned about the tendency for galvanic corrosion when aluminum comes in contact with water and other metals... but it's great to hear the health concerns regarding aluminum oxide have also been discounted.
Cheers, Lawrie
