58mm portafilter scrubbers - 2006/06/24 18:24
So I was in my local Loeb grocery store today, after finding a set of narrow brushes somewhere else, and looking for some suitable scrubbing pads to clean my portafilter..
What should I find but a short-handled pot scrubber that sure enough turns out to be 58mm. Has a circular scouring pad about 3/4" thick. Pretty much perfectly sized and shaped for cleaning portafilters, for less than $2 (this one was branded "Mirage," but I doubt that helps much). A single turn makes short work of grimey buildup from coffee oils. Ok, it's actually 59-60mm, which simply works to keep it flush with the edges of the portafilter.
Methinks I should perhaps look at one of the slightly softer ones. The spiffy black-padded model was the stiffest and does appear to finely etch the brass ... maybe I should have gotten the green one.

Beautiful!
I have a coffee gidget-gadget that looks like a tooth-brush with a curved head for cleaning the shower head. Bought at Discovery Coffee - but I have seen them in Toronto.
Everyone has a favorite coffee gadget.

More cheap-ass improvised coffee tools:
"Group brush" aka denture brush (Shopper's Drugmart Life brand $4):
Admittedly, a Pallo tool likely isn't much more expensive (aside from shipping) and comes with a couple of other nifty features. This works very well, though. You can even brush the group safely with the pump running, thanks to the curved handle.
Shatter-proof "knockbox," SnapWare brand container with prescription bottle insert as a knock bar. Throw it right in the dishwasher. I did say cheap! (Canadian Tire, $4)
My container is just wide enough for use with a 58mm portafilter and big enough to swallow several pucks while being small enough to deftly dump the contents into my narrow trash. Container is supposed
to be shatter-proof and two months' usage would suggest that it is living up to the claim. You can strike the edge of the container if you like and skip on the insert.
I do like the looks of the Grindenstein, mind you, and it isn't all that expensive for a more attractive solution.

Update: 9 months on and my $4 knockbox is still going strong. Nary a mark on the container and I haven't even damaged the Rx bottle knock bar yet! (there is an insert from another bottle plugged into the open end to give it strength).
I expected to be through a whole bunch of "bottle bars" by now, but doesn't appear to be necessary.
Not pretty, but takes up very little space, works very well, and cleans up in the dishwasher.
