Gaggia Coffee pump makes huge noise - 2006/08/08 14:19 [Posted by Dave from the Crew Chat stream: we seem to keep missing you, gast_7319] :

I am using "Gaggia Coffee". recently, its pump makes huge noise just after switch on, like "ga! ga! ga!", and coffee seems to be too hot. I am wondering if the pump or sensor for the water temparature may be broken or damaged. Is there any way to check what may be wrong, and if so, how I would be able to fix this? I could send it back to Gaggia UK, but it costs 60 GBP... Thank you very much for your help in advance.

Re:Gaggia Coffee pump makes huge noise - 2006/08/08 14:28 Sorry that you are having trouble, Gast.

First, can I ask some basics about what you are experiencing and ask if you could run through a typical scenario of how you use your machine?

The loud "ga ga ga!" noise sounds like the sound that the ulka pump makes when it is re-priming itself with water. You may notice this sound also if your water reservoir gets nearly empty and you try to run the pump. Double check the positioning of the intake hose in the reservoir.

How long has the machine been turned on before you are running the pump and experiencing this problem? How long between successive use of the pump? I don't recommend leaving the machine idle for much more than 30 minutes without refilling the boiler (run the pump a few seconds), since the Gaggia machines (at least the non-solenoid models) can boil dry over a relatively short period of time.

If you run the pump with no portafilter in place, and get this noise, is there a noticeable delay before water begins to flow? Does the pump stop making that noise after several seconds and start pumping water?

If the pump continues to make this noise and does not stop, or no water is flowing, shut it off.

Re:Gaggia Coffee pump makes huge noise - 2006/11/22 07:12 Hello, I've had my carezza machine for 2-3 months. It makes coffee for the two of us daily. We clean everything properly and take very good care of our machine. This morning we woke up and are experiencing a grinding noise when you turn the machine on and it begins to pump.

To answer the below questions:
1> The machine makes this noise regardless of length of time in the on position. The water resevoir is full and I attempted to pour new water through it and it flows through fine.

2> I checked the position of the intake hose and it appears to be fine.

3> I use the pump daily to make coffee. The resevoir is always filled.

4> When I run the machine, the water immediately comes out, it just makes a terrible noise doing so.
The brewing seems to be affected by the noise - the first cup I made with this sound has dramatically changed the way that the coffee is produced.

I have not made any successive cups, I cannot find anything online to suggest a solution. I have left a message for Gaggia's technical support and was hoping for a solution online.

Hoping for help!

-Chad

Re:Gaggia Coffee pump makes huge noise - 2006/11/22 08:47 2 t 3 monthes...
Who did you buy it from?
To be fair, every pump driven espresso machine sounds like a cross between a cement mixer and electric sheep shearing cutters.
Yup - they are that loud.
I have used a Careeza and a Topazio (virtually the same internals...) and they are capable of dead-waking noise.

Re:Gaggia Coffee pump makes huge noise - 2006/11/22 10:52 I purchased it from Amazon.

It made a happy whirring noise before, at not a quiet volume. Now it makes a choking in rhythm unhappy to be functioning noise.

Should I disassemble it?

Thanks,
Chad

Re:Gaggia Coffee pump makes huge noise - 2006/11/24 09:49 Well, the problem is solved! Turns out the issue was that the pump was unseated in the top housing of the machine. I had called Gaggia and left a message and they called back today and walked my gf through the procedure to fix it: (along with several suggestions of what it could be) The first fix was to remove the two screws on the top panel and to remove the top. Make sure that the pump is not moving around, reseat it if it is. That was the trouble for me.

Just wanted to post the solution since you all have been so helpful.

Thanks much!
