Toshiba My Cafe - Missing Mystery Piece - 2006/08/13 21:50 Brought forward from an article comment today, Maw writes:
Bought this Toshiba Mill & Drip from our local assistance league. Discovered it is missing a piece that sits atop the basket. Would like to know it this piece served any function, other than closing the 1/2" space between the basket top and the lid. Hope you can help me. Thanks for your kind service. Maw

Re:Toshiba My Cafe - Missing Mystery Piece - 2006/08/13 22:06 Maw,

I have never had one of these in my hands. Can you give us a description, a picture of the missing piece (e.g., from the manual) to give us some basis for answering your question? It wasn't, by any chance, a water distribution device (such as a piece of plastic with many holes), or something to help contain the grinds from the built-in whirly-blade, or something to protect the grinding mechanism from backsplash? I'm just guessing, I have never seen a My Cafe myself.

A quick google reveals a few comments that this machine may actually brew hot enough, unlike most coffee makers (especially the fancy, expensive ones).

If anyone else reading has owned a My Cafe and has an answer to Maw's question, do post it here: it would be appreciated.

Other than that, good to see you back, Maw!

Re:Toshiba My Cafe - Missing Mystery Piece - 2006/08/14 20:35 Wish I had a picture or a manual! When I brought the My Cafe home, we tried to grind and brew, not realizing the part was missing. Beans and grounds flew in all directions and also went into the water compartment. So apparently it's the lid for the beans/grounds basket that's missing. We really want this machine but it looks hopeless. The very few mentions I saw of it (somewhere online - maybe on your site) were very positive. Must have been a goodie back in the early 80's. Thanks for writing back. This is a fun site. I'll still hope someone has some info. Maw

Re:Toshiba My Cafe - 2006/08/14 21:06 Thanks for the feedback, Maw.

I'm not sure where to look for parts for a discontinued Toshiba coffee maker (their own product sites don't own up to having made kitchen appliances). Colin?

Just for the sake of argument, it doesn't happen to look anything like the Mr. Coffee Grind & Brew, Model GBX12, does it? [Edit: really don't think so]

I don't suppose it looks like you might be able to fashion a replacement from something like a small/medium ice cream (sherbet) tub lid? This is a reach, but not having seen your coffee maker, I wonder if there is any chance of cutting a few holes in one of these to replace the piece that contains the grounds and keeps them separate from the water -- especially if it happened to be mostly just a ring.

Re:Toshiba My Cafe - 2006/08/17 19:30 Thank you, Dave! I bought 2 different little 4-cup pots and tried their lids. But, each had openings and grounds still flew out. They were also a little too high. The grounds basket is on the top left, the water tank, top right, A 2-inch arm swings over to drip water onto the (missing)lid. Beneath the water tank, sits the pot. Beneath the grounds basket is the motor apparently. The pot is a creamy white and brown - 70s-looking. The few references I've read online really liked this machine. I broke down and bought a Mellita Mill & Brew today. I'm reluctant to give up on the Toshiba though. Thanks for your interest. Gwen

Re:Toshiba My Cafe - 2006/09/04 12:27 Hi-If you are going to sell off the parts of your Toshiba "My Cafe" I am interested. I would like to buy the plastic part that goes on the bottom of the brew basket. I read in the other messages that someone needs to top plastic piece. Please contact me at: David@famouscookies.com

Thank You !!--David

Mr. Coffee Mr. Coffee Grind & Brew, Model GBX12 - 2006/09/05 13:34 I have the GBX12 and it seems to have a part missing that engages the grinder blade. It would be something that is part of the post on the actual machine, not a brew/grinder basket component.
