extra portafilter ??? - 2006/09/28 12:19 I think I could get the 4 double shots
out faster every morning if I had two
portafilters. That way I could be tamping
one while the other is getting used, etc.

Is there a standard size for portafilters?

What's the best way to get an extra portafilter?
I've tried eBay without luck and emailed the
company but haven't heard back yet.

advice?

thanks...

Re:extra portafilter ??? - 2006/09/28 14:31 Joe,

What machine do you have and where are you?

You may find that your best bet is to get a second basket, rather than another portafilter. Much cheaper, too, and pretty lightweight for shipping. You will need to be able to easily pull the baskets in and out. If you have a commercial-style portafilter with a basket spring, this may rule out ridged baskets that lock tightly in the portafilter.

It isn't hard to dose and tamp a second basket, and then swap the prepared basket into the same portafilter for your second shot. Note the comment above regarding ridged baskets and stiff basket springs: even if you get it out, snapping the next basket back in would disrupt the seal of the coffee to the basket unless you tamp after switching baskets.

If you get a second portafilter, you will need to keep both of them hot. Doing so would likely still leave you dosing baskets outside of the portafilter and swapping them in right before pulling your shot -- in short, no real benefit.

To answer your question, though, portafilters (and groups) come in multiple sizes. Even where the size is the same, the portafilter design might differ in the location or size of the 'ears' that lock it in. You would need to buy a portafilter that matched your machine.

We'd need to know what model of machine you have and where you are located to suggest where you could get what you need. It might be difficult to get a replacement portafilter OR basket for some home machines. If you have a 58mm portafilter, baskets should be readily available.

Of course, your second portafilter could be a naked portafilter (no bottom) ... but that would just make Colin upset.

Re:extra portafilter ??? - 2006/09/29 19:20 thanks Dave,

made my machine (Breville Cafe Roma) unless
you know somewhere that sells their parts in
Victoria BC ? I go to Vancouver about never.
