Roasting Tips - 2006/12/28 09:06 Got a home roaster (iRoast) for Christmas and have roasted 3 batches, all with differing results, which I expected as a rookie. A couple of questions - is it normal for a roasting batch to produce virtually ZERO chaff (This was a Sulawesi Toraja Decaf from Sweet Maria's)? Second question, besides Sweet Maria's, what is a good soruce for home roasting information? Thanks!

Re:Roasting Tips - 2006/12/28 13:44 Decaf has no chaff. It is lost in the decaffeinating process.

Most folks find that there are two keys to successful decaf roasting in the IR2. You need smaller batches (about 30% smaller)AND it is very helpful to save some chaff from an earlier non-decaf roast, and leave it/put it in the chaff collector. If you don't do this (or find some other method to impede air flow), the decaf roasts much too fast.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the manufacturer's manual recommends waiting two hours between roasts, and is not enthusiastic about roasting more than once per day.
