Naked/crotchless/bottomless portafilter - 2007/02/12 20:58Anyone have any experience buying a naked portafilter for Miss Silvia? Any suppliers of naked portafilters anyone cares to recommend? Or am I better off buying a stock portafilter and giving it the chop?

I know there are two companies on ebay that you can send it out to to have it done for $30 (including the larger filter basket). Quality looks decent, but the rim seems to be just a tad too high, making it a tight fit in Silvia. I'm thinking about getting a hold of a rotary tool and trying to grind it down a half a millimeter or so. It does fit, but it is really tight and makes the original PF fit a bit looser afterward - though no leaks.

Thanks Current Coffee. Too bad that the Great Infusions model is a bit snug. The prospect of a fully chromed portafilter is an attractive one so I'd really hate to have to trim it and expose the brass.

I guess i sold you a naked PF -- I am wondering why it is too tight - when I demo'd them it was a great fit with the handle turned to about 90 degrees (yes - turned less than with the standard Rancilio pf). As long as the PF is not too close to the disengagement point it should be fine -- you just don't want it to pop off from pressure. Please tell me if you burn out your gasket and i will set you up with a new one for shipping only - okay?

I bought it in Jan or Feb of this year.
Overall, the quality of the naked PF looks good. (Althoug, the tight locking springs coupled almost razor sharp bottom edge ended up drawing blood the first time I removed the basket it came with )
Two things I have noticed when comparing to the Rancillio PF:
1. The wings on the bottomless PF stick out slightly more than the Rancillio (wider overall circumference) - but I don't think this interferes with fit in the Silvia
2. The baskets sit higher up in the naked PF. This (I think) makes it a much tighter fit. However, I can usually get a good seal with minimal leakage. I do wonder if this will wear out the gasket though. Now when I use the original Rancillio PF, it fits much less snuggly.
I'm thinking about attempting to manually file the rim down a bit where the basket sits - but I don't want to ruin anything.

To reply to your comment, while it gets snug at about 90 degrees, I find that it will leak when pouring a shot unless I force it around to almost the point where the Rancilio PF would sit.

If you really want to get into it, take an 8 oz cup of hot water and put it underneath a bottomless portafilter and pour it that way. Goes straight from the pf to the water, no cooling down from the ...

I've had my Mokita for 5 years now, and I find the coffee is getting kind of bitter - sour, and there is almost no more crema. At first, I thought it was the coffee itself, but now I doubt it....
