Decompression Check? - 2007/08/23 19:00 Gaggia folks:

Is there any way to check to make sure the 3-way solenoid is working properly? I get the impression from reading various posts, that I should be hearing a "satisfying ker-sploosh" when I turn off the brew switch. My machine is ominously silent, and there is absolutely nothing coming out of the decompression tube. My puck is pretty soggy too - not what I was expecting.

Sorry - the machine is new to me, so I'm not sure what is normal behavior.

The best check for the functionality of the 3-way solenoid is a blind filter - you can buy one for 12$ or make one. I did both.

There is a possibility that your 3-way is clogged.
Do you (or did you) de-scale or back-flush your machine often?

You do have it right - when every brew cycle ends, there should be a satisfying sploosh as the waste water is ejaculated into the drip tray. Colin is the Senior editor and creator of the CoffeeCrew.Com Website

For espresso I'd even say an hour is WAY too long. It should go from the grinder to the pf. After 30 seconds I consider my espresso old and dump it. There's just too many chemical changes happening...

GROUND coffee is fresh for about an hour. Ditch the pre-ground coffee and grind it yourself. Your espresso is never going to be right if you use pre-ground. Sad reality....
