Aromia, sl70 ro Gaggia baby - 2007/12/04 17:53
I'm looking for my second home machine. I have a solis bur grinder.
My needs are for 2 cups a day, one espresso and one with steamed milk for my wife.
the Rancho is out of my price range and I am looking at the Saeco, Solis and Gaggia. Any recommendations of the three? Looks will probably matter to my wife, but I would prefer better coffee.

Well...
The SL70 has the biggest boiler and it is brass... marine brass.
The Gaggia Baby has a alum-composite boiler and a 3-way solenoid.
The Saeco has a S-Steel boiler.
I would tolerate the slightly smaller portafilter on the Solis and get the SL70.
It represents the best value of the 3 suggested.

There is some conversations about replacing the filter basket on the Solis, can you point me towards the recommended replacement?

There is a non-pressurized replacement that you can get from Baratza, QualityCoffeeSystems.Com, EspressoTec.com (possibly) and WholeLatteLove.com

I just received my sl70 in the mail. On the outside of the box it says "thermobloc heater with solis brewing system". Did they change from a boiler? I haven't unpacked it yet as I am trying to see if they changed the model.

The SL70 has always had an 8-ounce Marine brass boiler -

Info on the QCS website indicates the SL-70 uses a dual boiler with a brass boiler for brewing and a thermoblock for steam.
Cut and pasted from the QCS webpage describing the SL-70 and SL-90 (I added the underlining):
Features include an integrated coffee tamper, a large cup storage area which can be heated up on the SL 90 model(shown at right) and a vertically adjustable cup tray. Swivel steam and hot water nozzle with finger protection. But wait, there is more!
- Metal housing
- High performance pump providing pressure of up to 19 bar
- Thermal block heater with special SOLIS brewing system for optimum froth
- Large capacity water reservoir
- Large storage plate for cups
- Height adjustable drip tray
- Control panel with rocker-switches and diodes
- Swivel steam and hot water nozzle with saftey grip
- Filter holder and inserts for 1 or 2 cups
- Special filter for pods
- Swivel hot water and steam nozzle with safety grip for hot drinks and milk frothing -(280psi) pressure, which guarantees perfect aroma extraction from the coffee powder
- Heavy-duty brass boiler assures optimum brewing temperature
- Solid brass portafilter helps retain heat during the brewing process
