Atomic Coffee Trivinalia - 2008/05/17 11:15Greetings Frederic Long time no chat. I'm currently running the Atomic that has no frothing gear. My ne plus ultra minimalist statement. As cool as all those red knobs are, I don't need that stuff. But if they were green.... My group handle is the one with the smaller handle. If I measure the distance from the upper edge of the group handle straight down the inside (the side depth), the straight edge measures 1-1/4". The diamter of the group handle is 2-3/32" The depth of the basket is 1-1/8" The basket is interesting. Instead of a flat bottom, it is rather "domed... up." In fact, the center of the basket is 3/8" higher than the base- Strange an interesting design that i cannot understand or comprehend, which is what makes it so wonderful. I have another minor collection of stove tops, all really just jewellery as the Atomic NEVER leaves the stove, and these other machines make the occasional visit. I've noticed that one of the key determinators of the coffee result of each machine is the ratio of the size of the coffee ground reservoir to the water reservoir. And... there is quite a bit of difference between the various machines, ie some have relatively tiny coffee ground reservoirs... whilst others are huge. The more coffee the machine can hold (in general), the more stout the result. We seattlites tend to like our coffee vampire blood rich... I have a hard time reconciling that with the fact that my friends to a tee all prefer the Atomic brew, and the fact that my Atomic sports a TINY grounds reservoir. Maybe is has to do with other stuff, like my Atomic has a million miles on it's odometer... or that everyone is just wowed by it's curvy curvature. I purchased an antique gas stove and then spent a year restoring it, just to provide my Atomic with a heat source that also has at least a little panache. I'm in the mood for experimentation. I'm wondering if I can pack a bit more coffee into my Atomic. Is my group handle "standard" or... did was the group handle depth different than the "usual" Atomics? I'm wondering if a replacement flat bottomed basket will fit my group handle (Basket 1-1/8" depth). If there are deeper replacement group handles available (Sorrentina?), if they will fit my machine I supposed that might be a swell way to add even more capacity. Probably only to find that my current set up is optimal. What say you? Best wishes. Oh, PS... I keep getting outbid on those Atomics that come up with the smaller carafes! Mike.

Alas - I cannot do that. It seems that there are nefarious types out there that have been grabbing stuff off of the CoffeeCrew website and putting their own spin on the Atomic phenomenon - Not much I can do to stop that. I heard from Frederick some months ago that a standard KRUPS espresso basket fits into the PF of the Atomic allowing for more espresso coffee... You hit the nail on the head above - The stout, as you put it, is proportional to the low ratio of reservoir to coffee holder - indeed. Good observation. For espresso I'd even say an hour is WAY too long. It should go from the grinder to the pf. After 30 seconds I consider my espresso old and dump it. There's just too many chemical changes happening...
GROUND coffee is fresh for about an hour.
Ditch the pre-ground coffee and grind it yourself.
Your espresso is never going to be right if you use pre-ground.
