best online Rancilio tutorials ?? - 2007/05/29 08:39 I'm waiting for my Rocky/Silvia combo to arrive and would like to read whatever you think is the very best tutorials on these particular machines.

For instance, is it a good idea to "zero out" the grinder (note the dial setting where the blades touch?). That seems a little risky. Does it damage the burrs if they touch?

Anyways... if you've got links to best online Rancilio tutorials I'd be very grateful to read them.

many thanks,

Re:best online Rancilio tutorials ?? - 2007/06/04 13:42 I should be ashamed.

I owned a Silvia for a year and never wrote it up properly.
Sold it on a whim. I still have the Rocky grinder.

Now with a new camera (EOS - 30D) and some rekindled enthusiasm (and a Gaggia Classic on loan...) I hope to knock off some more articles soon.

I appreciate the tips and links though

Re:best online Rancilio tutorials ?? - 2007/06/11 20:05 "the Eagle has landed" !!!

Using the same beans as Fantastico uses in their Americanos I have been knocking out shots as good (or better!) than they serve. WooHooo !!!

Next stop: roaster!!!

p.s. anyone reading this to gain Rocky/Silvia knowledge, keep in mind they changed the brewstat a few years ago so earlier comments about temp surfing may not apply. cheers!

Re:best online Rancilio tutorials ?? - 2007/06/11 20:56 Glad to hear you are getting along well, Nick!

Just curious, are you pulling your shots tighter than Fantastico? I only have a single beverage to go by, but at that time I remember them opting toward a less bodied normale, with pleasant subtleties and spice. Not the kind of wham-bam thick espresso that I tend to pour at home.

Dave

P.S. Enjoy it while you can, pretty soon this won't be good enough

well... maybe a Mazzer would be better? but seriously, I think I prefer the ristretto side of the spectrum if I understand you correctly and probably lean in that direction. I have only had 3 Americanos from Fantastico in the last year (for my money Habit is better...) and the last one must have had channeling - so ya, gimme the wham-bam thick espresso any day!!
