Rancilio Rocky vs. Baratza Virtuoso - 2007/05/16 13:18
Would the Rocky be noticeably better than the Virtuoso? The Virtuoso's users manual made it seem very easy to clean. Would the Rocky be much harder to maintain?

The rocky is in a different league -- I mean, look at the price.
Both of them are very easy to keep clean.
One is a tank...
and the other is a... hummer.

I liked the "pulse" button idea on the Virtuoso as I want to grind directly into the portafilter without wasting any more than I have to (ie. repeated on/off cycles). Does the Rocky have a similar switch for this purpose? I know it's not in the same place but is it designed for heavy use like that or are you supposed to set a kind of timer?

The Rocky has a main power switch on the right-hand side and a "pulse" switch under the PF cradle.
I've never used a Virtuoso, but the Rocky has been serving me well for the last 5 months. Pound for pound, it will be the most dense "appliance" you will ever own (the motor alone weighs something like 12 Ibs!). Was planing to get a Solis Maestro - but when I beheld the Rocky, there was no going back.

I returned a Maestro and just tried a Virtuoso with only slightly better results. My thoughts are to go with a Rocky. My older Solis Barista (Starbucks) produces a better grind. It seems the settings from 1-20 are like a find drip machine to a French Press and from 21-40, well I guess it might be used for installing sidewalk blocks. But seriously, I believe that some tweaking is still required on the Virtuoso just as was stated in the review.

Good timing on this post.
Now that I have finished my initial thoughts on the Talea Ring plus brewer, I will be moving on to a new look at the Baratza Virtuoso grinder now that they are everywhere; Starbucks.
