Atomic flow!! - 2007/01/27 19:45 I am hoping to get some advice on improving the coffee flow and brew with the Atomic.

I tried all that has been pointed out for getting the perfect shot, but I seem to be getting a very eruptive flow. It spits out really fast causing coffee to splatter around my stove top. Firstly is this normal?
If no,
how do I improve flow?
- Finer grounds?
- Try tamping?
- Lower heat?
- any other suggestions!!

Cheers,
Aashish

Re:Atomic flow!! - 2007/01/27 21:41 Aashish,

While a finer grind and/or more coffee in the basket might help, I would suggest to start with your main ingredient and look how fresh it is.

A fast flow could be caused by a grind that is too coarse, channeling of water through unevenly ground or packed coffee, underdosed coffee, or quite simply coffee that is stale and dried out.

Fresh coffee not only tastes better, but will likely help you achieve a more even extraction and avoid channeling, even when using a slightly coarser grind.

Give it a try, and follow Frederick's advice in his articles on the Atomic (see the Atomica menu, top right).

Let us know how you are making out!

Re:Atomic flow!! - 2007/01/28 01:48 Thanks Dave......
Aashish, if there is a SUDDEN sputtering of coffee mess , it is because you are tamping down on a too fine grind.

The ground should be slightly finer than white sugar granules, not like for an espresso shot.
You should half fill the filter, tap it a few times for the grounds to level off then continue to almost the top. You level the top with slight pressure with the back of a spoon.

Coffee should be french roast.
Heat should be high.

I did a small film on that and it's in here.

Try again.
