Thanks Colin and Frederick for advice back last November when I wrote about my not-all-there Sassoon.
I'm now coming back to trying to get the old thing up and running
I should now be able to hunt down a basket and seal - thanks
Before I could fit the seal though - there is quite a bit of a horrible, creamy-coloured gunk there, really hard - presumably the decayed old seal - but more like hard plastic than old rubber. Have you any advice as to a suitable solvent to clean this away. I've not tried undoing the screws of the filter as that seems to work OK and I'm reluctant to mess with it unless I have to, so would prefer to try to clean the stuff off in situ - (as we archaeologists say). There is enough of it in places to stop the seal sitting properly in its groove, so I think it will have to go.
Jug. I see that you, Frederick have new ones for sale - how much to buy and ship to UK please? Black handle.

My repro jugs are a mere $85 US plus $14 shipping to England.
The seal is no problem whatsoever I do have spares at $5 they are made of silicon and will last a looooong time. This very morning I refurbished a Thomas Cara that also needed a seal.
By all means, if those two small screws are easy to come off, then get them off and do a once over cleaning job under the dispersion plate.
Use a small screwdriver to pick at the remnants of the seal. Yes, they do metabolise into something else. Between window putty and year old taffy. But...it's worth getting at that spot. That is where EVERYTHING takes place. Think about it......okay, okay there is the frothing trick....

First I'll try to find a grounds basket - then come back to you for a jug & seal.
Odd what a difference polishing makes. I felt only curiosity about this unusually shaped piece of dull grey (gray!) metal when I dug it out of a box of stuff my sister had booted out of her kitchen. Now it all touchy feely - silky and asking to be stroked. It is the pre frother version so one smooth like from top to base.
Question is - will it make coffee?

IT will make the BESTEST darndest stove top coffee this side of heaven, you can bet your sweet bippy on that!
In a pinch, the old Pavoni filter basket will fit, except that the teeny holes are made for a more powder grind. I have two and passed the correct size drill in each and every hole. The bonus is that these filters are made of stainless. Bring the group (holder with the handle) to an espresso coffee machine place such as London Espresso (High Road, Tottingham) or Paravend and have them search the filter bin. That's how I found mine.
The beauty of these incredible sexy machines is that they are very low maintenance. I am sure that you will love it once you get it together.
Toodle dee doo cracker bits (say it 6 times, it exercises the mouth for that whistling competition).
