non pressurized raportofilter - 2007/06/14 09:07 I read somewhere that you can replace the pressurized raportofilter with non pressurized in the Saeco machines. Does anyone know where to find one. I called Saeco in Ontario and they don't supply them.

Secondly, should I just purchase a Rancilio or Gaggia Classic instead?

Re:non pressurized raportofilter - 2007/06/14 13:05 This is an excellent question to pose prior to actually purchasing a machine -- because once you buy a machine with a pressurized PF -- you are pretty much stuck with it -- except if you buy a SOLIS SL70 or SOLIS SL90... which has both.

For the best bang for the $$$, I would go with the Gaggia Topazio. Yes, it has lots of plastic but it is the same internals as its bigger brothers and sisters... less the 3-way solenoid.

If you want a long term investment, I would suggest the Rancilio Silvia because it is the best value under 700$.

Re:non pressurized raportofilter - 2007/06/14 13:59 Thanks Colin, I was leaning toward the Rancilio but I'll check out the Gaggia.

Re:non pressurized raportofilter - 2007/06/15 13:25 I finally found one at espressoplanet.com. They also had them in the US at partsguru.com.

Between the handle and the shipping, I'm spending a little more than I really ought to: but it's an indulgence I've decided to accept.

If I were starting again, I'd follow Colin's suggestion and go with Miss Silvia: but this machine was a gift, and I'll make the best of what I have. (Maybe I'll PID it someday )

Re:non pressurized raportofilter - 2007/06/17 21:55 I have a Solis SL 90 with the pressurized PF. If I want to go to unpressurized, is it a new insert or a whole new pf?
Tom
Well to answer my own question I went to the review on the SL70 which said that you get the non-pressurized insert. Less bucks so that's good.

Re:non pressurized raportofilter - 2007/06/21 09:28 Following up to myself to note:

I received my non-pressurized Saeco portafilter from espressoplanet. It feels as though I got hosed on price (~$50), but there it is.

I'm pleased to report that I'm pulling pretty good shots without the support of the pressurized portafilter and am on my way to learning more and refining as I go.

Re:non pressurized raportofilter - 2007/06/21 14:08 Hosed? You feel hosed?

Trust me Grasshopper. $50 is a small price to pay to free yourself from the other-Worldly bonds of the pressurized faker-filter.

Soon you will be experiencing true espresso nirvana in the comfort of your own home.

Now stop whining and get back to practicing your Goddess-shots!

Re:non pressurized raportofilter - 2007/07/03 19:13 You are so right. I received my "by-pass" Saeco portofilter last week and I've just extended the life of my machine. The difference in espresso is like night and day.

After some instructions from my local barista at Black Pearl Coffee, I've finally been producing terrific espresso,
