Naked Portafilter - 2007/01/14 10:31 Alright folks ,what's the deal with these naked portafilters? I've read that it's usuful in troubleshooting espresso making by looking at the dripping but does it really make it any better? More crema and directly to the cup one person said where the benefits. I have however noticed that the shots appear to be really thick to the point where you can eat the shot with a spoon. You can see some great clips of geeks doing naked shots on You Tube. So what does everyone think? Will my shots be that much better with a naked PF on my Rancilio Silvia...when I get one? <sigh>

I doubt it.

Bottomless (naked) portafilters are more of a diagnostic tool than anything else. Some feel that the extra visual access to the shot as it is pressed through the basket can provide information such as the consistency, quantity, colour of crema (tiger striping) that can be useful in tweaking the regular parameters (grind, tamp, dosing, etc) - but how much real benefit this is, who can say?

If you are going to be using the same basket, etc, then just swapping a spouted portafilter for similar bottomless one is not likely going to do much for the shot at hand. However, cutting off the bottom of your portafilter does allow you to use triple baskets with the Silvia and in this fashion adds more tangible versatility.

Re:Naked Portafilter - 2007/01/21 10:16 I agree that you will most likely not notice a difference in flavour with a naked portafiliter, but it is an excellent training tool. Call me a geek, but I really like seeing the drips come off the bottom. It gives you a more hands on feel, and you can really see if you got a good shot before you drink it. www.currentcoffee.ca
