DeLonghi EC-701 - 2005/11/13 14:38
I purchased this espresso maker several months ago. It has worked great until about two - three weeks ago when it began making these ungodly gurggling sounds after brewing an espresso. It sounded as if pressure had built up inside the unit at was trying to escape. I could see the water in the resevoir tank bubbling from air bubbles backing up. It makes a good cup of espresso but I'm concerned something is wrong. I have cleaned it as described and don't really know what to look for from this point on.
I have normally left the machine on during the day because it receives extensive use and have had to turn it off to avoid the hissing and gurggling. Oh, one other thing. When inserting the maker arm it would always seal about dead center. Now it doesn't seal until going 3/4 of the turn.
Anyway, can anyone shed light on my problem or is it time to contact DeLonghi to get a new one?

You may have to adjust your tamp or the grind of your coffee. All pump powered espresso machines do this when they are pushed too hard. I was testing out the ECM Botticelli II Espresso machine yesterday and it did the very same thing when I loaded it up with coffee that was too fine.

Thanks. You may have hit the nail on the head. I have been using a VERY fine gound (turkish actually). What grade of grind should I be using.
I will try a coarser grind and see the result, however, does that explain the gurggling AFTER the shot is made and the coffee arm removed?

Turkish grind places way too much stress on the boiler - no harm done. What you are hearing is reverse pressure escaping out the steam wand and back into the water tank! Nice safety feature considering your machine develops enough pressure to launch a baseball 1/4 of a mile into the air!

Well, you are all correct. Once I corrected the grind there were no problems and I was back in business. However, the fine Turkish grind plugged most of the holes in the output so I had to remove it and clean "each" hole with a sewing needle (can't lie, my lovely wife did the dirty deed...lucky man . Unfortunately after just a few "worry free" applications all hell broke loose. Now the buttons for turning the coffee maker on and the steam buttons won't lock in the on position so I have to hold them in. Guess I will be contacting someone this week. Do you recommend I contact DeLonghi directly or the store where I bought the unit? I have had it for just shy of 6 months.
Guess I need to really study and learn the art of espresso making .

By all means, if the store is willing to handle it for you, speak to them. Is it still warrantied? If there is a DeLonghi service center in your area, you might get better service by bringing the product to them than trying to reach them by phone.
In future, I would suggest not using a metal tool to clean out the holes in your shower screen or filter basket. In all likelihood, you will end up stretching the holes. You can soak them in a coffee cleaner or dilute citric acid solution (<= 1 tbsp of citric acid per quart of water).
