Another Gaggia brewing problem - 2006/04/06 18:08 I recently acquired a gently used Gaggia Espresso. I'm not sure how old it is, but all parts look new and in good condition. The first 6 or 7 times I used it, it brewed and steamed/frothed well. Now, however, (after experimenting with frothing first, then brewing) it will no longer brew. It merely trickles a few drops slowly from the brew head. Steaming and frothing from the wand still work great, though. I thought there might be an air lock, so I re-primed it, but still no steady stream from the brew head. I did notice (with the top cover removed) that water seems to be trickling back into the water tank from the pressure release (?) tube inside. I'm at a loss as to what the problem is and if this can be fixed easily. Any ideas ?

Re:Another Gaggia brewing problem - 2006/04/06 19:13 Sounds like something has come loose inside the boiler and is plugging the apertures, and there's NOTHING in there.

Scale? Possibly it has built up so thick that it has flaked off and is cloggingthe outlet. With a thck scale deposit, if the machine hasn't been used for a while, then the heating and cooling cycles which occur when it is used again loosen it.

There are instructions here on the site for descaling; you may have to open up the boiler and descale it manually.

Good luck!

Re:Another Gaggia brewing problem - 2006/04/06 20:10 That would be good news if it's just a matter of cleaning.
Based on my description, you wouldn't think it's one of the parts malfunctioning?
I'm new to all of this, what is the best product to use to clean/descale without taking it apart?

Re:Another Gaggia brewing problem - 2006/04/07 19:20 SUCCESS!!
Descaling solved the problem--I'm getting a good brew stream like never before.
Thanks so much for the advice.
