Any New Vacuum Info? - 2006/06/11 16:55 My every day (non-espresso) coffeemaker is getting a bit long in the tooth and I have a hankering to return to the coffee of my youth. As a kid I was always fascinated sitting in the coffee shop watching the boiling water disappear up the funnel and come back down as coffee!! Yes, the old vacuum system. I have searched the forum, and the site, and the Internet, and it seems that whatever has been available recently is no more. The Bodum Santos has been discontinued, the Black and Decker V100 has been discontinued and the Krups has been discontinued (in electrics). Things seem to be quite limited, even in the stove top department. And what is present is small.

On e-bay people seem to think old Silex models are now gold plated collectors items worth significant sums plus shipping. You can still get the Bodum Santos 12 cup online for about $100-$140. But as a discontinued product, I am concerned about a supply of replacement filters. I saw a Bodum stovetop model today in a specialty store near Montreal but it was so small it would take 2 or 3 brewings to get us through a normal saturday morning. So my questions are:

1. Is my recollection that vacuum brewed coffee is significantly superior to today's Braun or Cuisinart drip/filter systems a sign that minor dimentia is moving in?

2. Can anyone recommend available vacuum systems for everyday use? Would you buy a Bodum Santos even if it is discontinued?

3. What's recommended for everyday use (vacuum or otherwise) when you don't want to fire up the Saeco?

Thanks in advance..... Ken

Re:Any New Vacuum Info? - 2006/06/11 20:59 In the U.S.A. you can visit SweetMarias.Com for the complete
over-view of everything that is available - vacuum wise.

Trust me - the good people at Sweetmarias leaves no stone unturned.

In Canada, there are numerous vendors that have semi-secret stashes of vacuum brewers.

EveryDay Gourmet has a Bodum Santos in stock.

they are out there -- and you do not need to buy EBay to get one.
