Beans in Toronto - 2006/06/22 16:28I'm a newcomer to the java world, but I've equipped myself with decent machinery, Silvia, Rocky and other appropriate accoutrements. My skill has improved to the point where I have pinpointed a problem, the beans. The blends that I have been using are the commercialized blends, Lavazza, Barzula, etc... The crema from these blends has been light in colour and taste mediocre. I need advice on where I can find great blends, here in Toronto if possible or even somewhere else. Please can anyone help?
Thanks

Re:Beans in Toronto - 2006/06/23 12:00Thanks Colin. Can you suggest a specific blend that isn't as bitter and as acidic as these Italian blends? Something smooth and aromatic.

Re:Beans in Toronto - 2006/06/23 12:24Hi Juan;
I second Colin's suggestion, but also check out Birds and Beans (http://www.birdsandbeans.ca). They have a good selection of beans available roasted or green (when you're ready to go to the next level and roast your own, which I heartily recommend by the way).

Re:Beans in Toronto - 2006/06/24 19:39I've tried her regular espresso blend and it's excellent. If getting downtown is an issue, darkcity (www.darkcitycoffee.com) delivers. They're charging $14 a pound or so with free courier delivery in the GTA if you order 2 lbs or more. $2 delivery otherwise.
I think this is more than Everyday Gourmet (not sure as I had a friend that works downtown pick up the espresso for me) but this gets you coffee roasted yesterday on your door by noon. Not bad if you live in the 'burbs.
From dark city, I've had their espresso blend, and some of the african coffees - Ethiopian Yirgacheffe and Harrar. They were all excellent as well.

So I took to your suggestion and made a trip to the St. Lawernce market this morning. I met Sara and told her store was recommended by colin at 'coffeecrew' and an immediate smile came to her face.
Anyhow, picked up just over a lb. of Espresso Bar Italia for $10... can't beat that! This blend is roasted 3x/week so you know you're getting a fresh batch everytime. Sara was helpfull and courteous and the coffee was excellent.
Thanks for the rec Colin.
