Baratza Virtuoso grinder discussions - 2006/06/27 18:40I have, a mere hour ago, shipped a Baratza Virtuoso grinder to Dave Anderson in Ottawa. It is a Baratza Virtuoso grinder with very low miles. I just received a new one from Quality Coffee Systems in Vancouver in exchange for some web updates. This one has some minor tweaks and improvements. I have been promising a complete review of the Baratza Virtuoso for monthes (and monthes) -- Truth is, this grinder is in mid-evolution. That is, it is in the process of improvement and modification. A natural response would be (should be) - Ok, I have bought one some monthes ago and now there are improvements? What does this mean to me, the consumer?
Well - Dave and I will be adressing that very issue. Trust me. Dave should receive his grinder in a day or so. Then, the games shall begin!Colin is the Senior editor and creator of the CoffeeCrew.Com Website

Re:Baratza Virtuoso update - 2006/08/08 10:50I had a frank and wide ranging conversation with Alan Adler of Aerobie Industries (maker/inventor of the Aeropress):
His observation was - his Virtuoso suffered from the same problem - all the range is compressed into the bottom 20 clicks.
I calibrated my Mark IV virtuoso so the burrs were chattering at ZERO -- even at that, there were (are) 3 clicks of espresso range, about 5 clicks of drip range, a few clicks of french-press and the rest is drain rock!Colin is the Senior editor and creator of the CoffeeCrew.Com Website

Re:Baratza Virtuoso update - 2006/08/09 11:21I call it chunky monkey. The good thing is that there are no obvious 'fines'...

As I recall, I obtained a larger quantity of very fine to fine grounds than I see in your photos (not easy photos to take, though). More grounds than 'fines' per se.
I won't be able to take a decent macro shot, so I won't pull my grinder apart again to reset the range and double-check. (I just had it apart for cleaning yesterday.)
Just to keep this in context: Up to a medium grind, the Virtuoso grinds very well and very evenly. It is just that the usable range is compressed into the lower half of the available settings, with the upper half rapidly coarsening well beyond what you would expect.

Re:Baratza Virtuoso update - 2006/08/09 13:21Spoke with Reg James today - of EspressoTec.Com
Of over 150 virtuoso`s sold in 3-4 monthes, one has come back as 'defective' - the complaint was:
"It is NOT grinding coffee... any coffee..."
Long story short: The DC Motor was wired backwards and was pushing the coffee up and out of the hopper! Well, not literally - but you get the idea!Colin is the Senior editor and creator of the CoffeeCrew.Com Website

Could bad taste come for poor maintenance?
Heck yes! It is the cause of 99% of taste problems with espresso coffee (all other mechanical things being normal and the coffee being fresh...)

Hi,
I've had my Mokita for 5 years now, and I find the coffee is getting kind of bitter - sour, and there is almost no more crema. At first, I thought it was the coffee itself, but now I doubt it....
Pouring the espresso into the hot water, saves the crema.... I have has this request a few times, as for taste difference, I do not know if it does....
As opposed to the other way around? Do you mean the difference between pouring the water over the espresso as opposed to pouring the espresso over the hot water?
If so the only real difference, in...
Bringing this up again as I never did buy a machine.
