Replacing the large seal & 2 screws - 2006/08/23 17:09Ok - a really dumb question here. I have 4 Atomics. Husband decided to be helpful and unscrew the bit under the lids where the main seal and two screws are (on all of them). This was a month ago. Now here's the silly part. I can't remember how to put them back in. Can someone please give me step by step instuction of which way up the alloy filter goes, and what order to put the bits back in. Ie, should I screw the filter down (and which way) and then put the seal in? If I put the filter in the way it looks like it should go the screws don't seem long enough. If I put it together with the filter up the other way, that doesn't look right either (I am just sooo blonde....)
Please help - I'm desperate for a coffee!!

Very impressed when I picked it up as it was better than any of the others I have. One has no badge as it's worn off, but I am sure its from Bon Trading, as it has the original instructions with the coffee grinds and Bon Trading's deatils stamped on the back. I'll probably sell it as it has no badge, bit its in awesome condition, and works well!!
Eagerly awaiting the reply on how to put the seals back in!! Thanks!

You should clean under there once a month.You put that main filter, called a dispersion plate by the way, with the bump OUTSIDE. The lip or small "curb" keeps the big seal in place. This main seal slips IN the groove AFTER you screw the dispersion plate back in.
I obtained a very rare first type of ATOMIC with the frother, with almost NO use on the odometer. Why?, Well the ex owner decided to put the seal and retain it with the dispersion plate, the screws were not long enough, obviously.
So: screw the plate in first, with the bump outside, towards the coffee holder, slip the seal in the groove around the plate, press the seal around the bump. Have fun, Fresh Derrick.Frederick Nakos is the Global authority on the Atomic Espresso Coffee maker.

Picked up a "Stella" model. Stange looking unit compared to the others - no steamer wand. Also someone, instead of buying a seal had put some putty (like window putty). Took me days to scratch it out. Also it has some really dodgy looking screws like you would use to put peices of wood together!! Might have to get hold of Bon Trading for some parts to restore this poor neglected unit!!

The Stella is called a flat top in atomichi (the language of the cognoscenti of Atomics). It is a 2-3 cup model. The black knob has different threads and the coffee basket has bigger holes. The slow transformation of the Atomic is fascinating. With the Stella you have to use a coarser grind and have to tamp roughly 5 pounds worth. No more. The frother came much later.Glad that you can enjoy half of your collection. remember: DO NOT LEAVE THE BLACK KNOB ON between uses, not even overnight. I guess whatever was in there would have worked fine as a seal, but it was definately a putty type substance! Maybe the seal was just so old it had turned to putty!
Anyway am planning a trip to Aus soon so will pay a visit to Bon Trading and see what sort of goodies they have, pick up a new seal while I am there...
