what's up with Ottavio's ??? - 2006/10/02 08:10My wife assures me the owner can actually make a decent Americano but I've been to this place a few dozen times and have never seen him out front. Every single cup I've had there was watery crap. It's so bad I'm thinking of boycotting the place although I like the patio, find the bakery almost as good as Italian bakery, etc. These guys supposedly won "Best Deli on Vancouver Island" so I find it difficult to believe they don't realize just how terrifically BAD their coffee is. If anyone knows these guys, give them a tap with the clue bat.
Anyone else had their coffee?

Re:what's up with Ottavio's ??? - 2006/10/02 11:51Yea - I have had the coffee... several times. The owner has not made a coffee or espresso in an awful long time. There are too many people making espresso that are, well, clueless.
Solution: Do not buy their coffee.
Yeah - I should change their review on my site. They serve illy espresso. yea, it is bland. If you want to buy some it is over-priced.
one of the owners actually told me that "although it is expensive, you use less!"
Which we all know is utter bullshit.
Like I say. I eat there often. I just never touch their coffee or espresso.Colin is the Senior editor and creator of the CoffeeCrew.Com Website

Re:what's up with Ottavio's ??? - 2006/10/02 12:34A friend of mine was having lunch at Ottavio's when an older woman (in the process of nagivating the jumble of tables that are crammed inside) dropped her latte. Nobody came out from behind the counter to help her or to clean up the mess, much less offer the poor woman another drink.
Personally, I'm getting pretty fed up with business owners who leave running of their businesses to teenages who often have no authority to do anything beyond sell product, no clue about customer service and no knowledge about the product they're selling.
(And while I'm getting things off my chest, a pox on stores that expect you to leave your backpack at the desk but don't provide even a rudimentary claim check system to protect YOUR stuff.)

As you will remember, I was so spaced at the time from lack of sleep and a long flight that I couldn't pick a sandwich order, let alone pay much attention to the coffee. I remember not being wowed.
Fantastico and 2% Jazz were in a different world (a much better one).
They serve illy espresso. ... one of the owners actually told me that "although it is expensive, you use less!" I believe that is the sales pitch to justify the cost. At least, I have heard of owners getting that line. Yes, it is more expensive, but it's so good you only need seven grams! (for a double)

Yup. that is Ottavio!
I overheard the teenage staff slamming management once - everyone could hear... Things like: "The owners treat us like babies here..."
Actually, I have never seen any kind of really bad behavior. Everyone is uber courteous and the owners are gracious enough - busy as heck... and they certainly raised the level of food quality in Victoria several notches.
I do wish they would stop taking liberties with food names:
Like a Muffaletta sandwich is NOT that meat on a bun thing that they serve. The nerve!Colin is the Senior editor and creator of the CoffeeCrew.Com Website

Could bad taste come for poor maintenance?
Heck yes! It is the cause of 99% of taste problems with espresso coffee (all other mechanical things being normal and the coffee being fresh...)

Hi,
I've had my Mokita for 5 years now, and I find the coffee is getting kind of bitter - sour, and there is almost no more crema. At first, I thought it was the coffee itself, but now I doubt it....
Pouring the espresso into the hot water, saves the crema.... I have has this request a few times, as for taste difference, I do not know if it does....
As opposed to the other way around? Do you mean the difference between pouring the water over the espresso as opposed to pouring the espresso over the hot water?
If so the only real difference, in...
Bringing this up again as I never did buy a machine.
