Identifying Fake Atomics? - 2006/02/24 10:16I have been in the market for an Atomic for a while and was wondering how to seperate the genuine article from fakes/replications.
I have noticed the label differences, what is the deal with the "Bou" trading company versus the "BON". Also there seem to be variations with the knobs.

Re:Identifying Fake Atomics? - 2006/02/25 01:08I am sorry that it has come to this. Selling repros is one thing. Passing it off as real is theft. Whether it is a handbag or an Atomic.
I have seen the fakes. There probably was an initial typo on a batch first delivered to Bon Trading. The owners are getting on in age, would you believe early 80's ? And don't remember. Nevertheless. I have received correspondance from unhappy buyers and have noted these differences:
The shaft for the frothing valve should be brass, not steel. The jug has to have a smooth surface finish, no horizontal lines should show from machining operations. The vertical wall should form a closed bowl. This is difficult to do. Trust me.
The boiler plug should be a different entity than the surface of the boiler, not a polished over protrusion. Ditto for the filling hole, it should have a clear neck with a small radius between it and the arc column (also called the neck), not a polished gradient.
The handle for the coffee holder should show no longitudinal seams. A circular seam at two thirds from the screw is what you should see. The jug and the boiler should be aprox 133 mm in diameter. They should be of the same diameter

Re:Identifying Fake Atomics? - 2006/02/25 02:34Gosh, this really drives me up the wall! It's a free world, but honesty is expected! Advertise them as clones, don't fool the public. Because then it gives me the chance to let this very public know that children are slaving filling the molds near the furnaces and polishing these in unsalubrious conditions. Prove me wrong! I dare you!
I ASK FOR A COMPLETE BOYCOTT. Please people, avoid these like the plague.Frederick Nakos is the Global authority on the Atomic Espresso Coffee maker.

Actually -- in defense of the Indian company making knock-offs... I found their website intensely fascinating -- copies of every kind of scientific equipment and maritime antiquity...
I got an e-mail from the C.E.O.
They make obvious knock-offs and the Bou trading as opposed to "Bon" is an obvious identifier.
Whether or not they use child labor? Well who knows. There is injustice all over the World. We need to be careful how we cast accusations...

Re:Identifying Fake Atomics? - 2006/02/25 19:00Well, Captain, My Captain,
The first point, there WAS a batch of REAL Atomics with the mispelled wording. So the buyer must look for other characteristics. They are quite obvious.
Second, yes, I am accusing and hope to be proved wrong, I sincerely do. But they are the liars for now. Unless they also mispelled India. As for the rest of the label, the patents are history really and the word atomic is free for all to use.
This episode will only enhance the value of the originals. We cannot hold the hand of every potential buyer and prevent them from clicking outrageous sums of money on a bad copy. We can inform so much. My only fear is that some unhappy person writes about the quality of coffee produced with the pseudo and unwittingly taints the fame of the ones made in Italy.
A good thing to check is the placement of holes in the basket. If it looks like they are punched willy-nilly, stay clear.

Re:Identifying Fake Atomics? - 2006/02/26 02:43I was on EBay AUS last night.
I will not post the URL (because anyone that wants can find it) but...
There was a guy there that just fell victim to the 75$ Indian made Atomic replica.
The way I see it - the liars are the EBayers who are selling products they know are fakes.
The only mis-deed I see coming from this company in India is the Made in Italy statement on the sticker.
You are quite right Frederick - the original ones will retain their value. Real Atomics may increase in value. People just need to be a bit smarter in their purchases.

There are no Fake Atomics!!! - 2006/02/27 10:45There are no Fake Atomics!!!
Someone please show me a picture of a NEW FAKE - I have not seen one ever. I collect them. I have 22 of them. INCLUDING a Bou original!
This hysteria has all come about for 3 reasons, and I hope the hysteria goes AWAY for the same reasons:
1. There is a real batch of real Atomics from the late 60's that have the mispelling Bou - it was from a handwritten order from Australia to the manufacturer's. All shpments after that have the corrected Bon.
2. Ebay sellers trying to pump up their items by crying "fake" of the other listings and make more money. This is why people with Bou units are having to pull their listing! Notice the Bou units are all back on ebay as of today.
3. An email from India offering to make them... well um HELLO! I get about 18 a day from Nigeria, 10 from China, 12 from Holland etc etc. All sorts of internet scams. If you think for a minute that ordering 100 and getting 100 would happen - then fool you.
PLEASE stop this hysteria and leave the humble Atomic alone. Let it grow old gracefully! Check your facts! Just becaus esomeone 'told you so' is not a fact!! Thanks, James

Re:There are no Fake Atomics!!! - 2006/02/27 12:32Ok wise guy.
Look at the homepage of this website!
Why would someone deliberately mis-spell Bon and Woollhara at the same time?
Why?
Why - because they are fakes. Clones. Replicas.
You, sir, need to pull YOUR head out of the sand.
So you have 20+ Atomics. Big deal. Frederick Nakos has 14 -- all real. All holding their value. There is a photo of a brand new Atomic over in the photo gallery - go check it out yourself.

Re:There are no Fake Atomics!!! - 2006/02/27 12:48check ebay item - 4443008627 on ebay.com.au
Fake Chinese Atomic Espresso maker?
We are also quoted on item - 6257431560
"There is quite a discussion about the appearance of the "fakes" on CoffeeCrew.com generally it is believed it will increase the value of genuine ones. I am also told the "fakes" are being reproduced in India at a cost of $72.00USD each for an order of 100 or more. So don't go paying hundreds of dollars for a fake, stick with genuine items."
Hey - we did not create these discussions. These are genuine concerns raised by concerned buyers and collectors.
FYI - a Canadian collector has one of the Indian Atomic's on order. He is aware he might be out 76$ by a scam artist -- but doesn't care.

Could bad taste come for poor maintenance?
Heck yes! It is the cause of 99% of taste problems with espresso coffee (all other mechanical things being normal and the coffee being fresh...)

Hi,
I've had my Mokita for 5 years now, and I find the coffee is getting kind of bitter - sour, and there is almost no more crema. At first, I thought it was the coffee itself, but now I doubt it....
Pouring the espresso into the hot water, saves the crema.... I have has this request a few times, as for taste difference, I do not know if it does....
As opposed to the other way around? Do you mean the difference between pouring the water over the espresso as opposed to pouring the espresso over the hot water?
If so the only real difference, in...
