Newco Whereco? - 2006/11/10 19:55Man. It's almost impossible trying to find these Newco OCS Brewers in Ontario.
No retail stores carry them. Nearest distributor (1 of 3 in Canada)is 200 miles away and does not seen too keen on selling Newco stuff in small volume.
There is a great distributor that is selling them for a good price (dccoffeeproducts.com) but they are unable to ship Newco stuff to Canada because of the presence of Canadian distributors who suck for retail market - at least the one here does.
Finally I found a guy in Ohio (essentialwonders.com) who is offering the OCS-8 for $135 and the OCS-12 for $170 USD. These arn't great prices on there own, but he is willing to ship them to Canada for free which might make things reasonable.
Anyone else having any luck finding a decent brewer north of the border?

She put me on hold for a while to determine if she had any she could sell me. Then finally came back and said that there was one onsite she could sell me - but didn't know the price. Said she would call me back with the price. That was last Thursday. Still waiting...
Can I ask you, Colin, how the one you have been using for the past couple of years is holding up? Also, what size Bunn filters does it take? The Bunn home Brewer 10 cup size or the 12-cup Bunn-O-matic commercial size (like the ones in Tim Hortons)? Also, Any idea where one might be able to acquire a permanent filter a la Swissgold that would fit the OCS-8?

In the opinion of the coffeecrew, there are 2(two) coffee makers worthy of brewing good coffee beans:
The Newco OCS-8 and the Technivorm Clubline.
The dutch made Technivorm is not available anywhere in Canada and more and more American importers will not export or sell to Canada. BBC is in the business of 'reporting' who carries them - I think they are importers or something. They have always been attentive with me... then again, I represent this website... so I guess they have to pay attention.Colin is the Senior editor and creator of the CoffeeCrew.Com Website

I am interested in either the OCS or the Technivorm. But can't decide if the extra $100 for the Technivorm is worht it.
The Technivorms seem to be of better construction - as they are hand made out of solid components - unlike the plasticky OCS-8. However, it seems that this same hand-made attribute results every once in a while in a few duds as personal reviews of these machines mention the occasion power light that does not always come, etc.
I think the OCS has the standard thermal carafe going for it as it seems to never be a good idea to let coffee site on a hotplate. Technivorms do come with thermal carafes but this comes at a slight premium, for - going by reports from others - only an average carafe.
Finally, the Technivorms are compatible with the Swissgold re-usable filters, which with a decent grinder - are reported to deliver more of the natural essences of the brewed bean than its paper counterpart.
Alas, I am not aware of any permanent filter available for the OCS machines?

a.) I would not use permanent filters with these machines. Sorry, no reason other than taste.

For espresso I'd even say an hour is WAY too long. It should go from the grinder to the pf. After 30 seconds I consider my espresso old and dump it. There's just too many chemical changes happening...
GROUND coffee is fresh for about an hour.
Ditch the pre-ground coffee and grind it yourself.
Your espresso is never going to be right if you use pre-ground.
