flakey atomic - 2007/05/23 00:23 Hi all!

I recently strolled into an antique store on the central coast of NSW Australia due to a broken down car and several hours on my hands. Only to find a beutiful old coffee machine at bargin prices... yep I finally got that much coveted machine!

I've been following advice on restoring and cleaning the old beauty and it all seems ok regarding seals and parts.

The main problem seems to be corrosion! I've been soaking the inside in citric acid, shaking, boiling, shaking, given it to my partner to shake, pulling it apart, draining, rinsing and running coffee through and am still finding white flakey bits pouring out... Is this the end of the machine, before its begun?

Has anyone experienced this before or, is there anything else I can do?

I'll continue to shake in the meantime...
Best,
b

Re:flakey atomic - 2007/05/23 03:07 Hi there Bernadette !
It is far from the end of the machine !
In fact I don't think that they can die.
Just keep shaking and all those flakes will come out eventually. Heat and cold cycles will dislodge them. This means that your water is softer than the one used in the machine in it's previous life. Don't be worried, that scale is not the aluminum breaking down at all. When you look inside the filling hole, you will notice a pebble finish, that is NOT corrosion, simply the way the surface looks when the main body was sand cast. They didn't polish the inside.....yes I agree, they had to cut corners Don't forget: NEVER LEAVE THE BIG BLACK KNOB ON ! Not even overnight. After use, when cold, take it off completely.
