Re:Technivorm KBT741 reviewed - 2007/07/26 10:11I really like the reviews for the Technivorm KB741, but I have since noticed that they have come out with a new model that looks almost identical (except for a rounded tower). The new unit is called the Thermal Moccamaster CD...
Does anyone know anything about this and whether it will be the same quality as teh KB741? I really want to have the best quality, but somewhat prefer the looks of the new Moccamaster...

Re:Technivorm KBT741 reviewed - 2007/07/28 16:43It looks like the same thing.
I had coffee with Mark Poul yesterday of Transcend Coffee - they sell lots of the Clubline Technivorm coffee brewers and he has a chance to meet up with some of the engineers of Clubline - Holland.
I passed along my concern that the brewers have one big flaw - they brew into an open carafe - which seems like a big compromise - The NewCo OCS series of brewers brew the coffee through an ingenious carafe cap that protects the brewed coffee from the open air.
The Technivorms brew the coffee across a gap that is at least an inch of open air into an empty carafe.
Room for improvement I think.Colin is the Senior editor and creator of the CoffeeCrew.Com Website

MoccasMaster CD thermal - 2008/02/07 20:14My understanding after reviewing coffeegeek.com and e-mailing people at Sweet Maria's and Boyd (US importers of Technivorm) is that the MoccaMaster and Clubline models are identical in terms of innards. The CD stands for "Clement design" which is an aesthetic improvement and redesign over the clubline (KB models) which boasts the original "Smitdesign". The other difference is that the CD model does not have the 3 drip switches on the filter holder as does the clubline and CD thermal models. All models now have the 9 showerheads.
The only preference is whether you want a glass carafe with the mixing tube for better coffee stratification (as coffee brewing weakens towards the end) with a hot plate or whether you prefer a thermal carafe that does not have a mixing tube. The other thing to consider is that the thermal models are not vaccuum sealed therefore the coffee drips in open air into the open carafe since the screw top prevents you from placing the thermal carafe under the filter during brewing.
I hope this helps.

This is my minor beef about the Technivorm thermal carafe: It would have been easy to tighten the interface between the brew head and the carafe - and yet you have coffee traveling several inches through open air into the carafe.
The Newco OCS-8 and OCS-12 win bigger kudos for designing a better brewer/carafe interface... brilliant.
And better tasting coffee I think.Colin is the Senior editor and creator of the CoffeeCrew.Com Website

Re:MoccasMaster CD thermal - 2008/03/10 21:44I can't say anything about the Technivorm but I am a happy camper with an OCS 12 pour over. Easy to use , few parts , simple , great hot coffee , good carafe , brews fast...what more could I ask for.
There are no timers , clocks , extensive mechanics just two switches ( on and off , though it automatically switches off after the brew cycle), the main unit body , the filter holder , carafe lid and carafe.
Got mine at http://www.oughtred.com/ and many thanks to Michael for his great customer service on the unit and his bean which I like.

Re:MoccasMaster CD thermal - 2008/03/10 22:11My colleagues in an adjacent "Lab" have been pummeling the Technivorm with 4 to 6 brews a day - and running a Baratza Virtuoso to its outer limits.
The Technivorm, after a one year loan is shining and brewing at the exact temperature of 200 degrees.
The Virtuoso, at a straining 6 loads per day, had some issues with the upper burr assembly; 2 breaks in the tabs that hold the upper burr and a guide tab broken off. It is a quick and inexpensive fix - keeping in mind that the Virtuoso was being used about 3 times as often as it should be - and the users were almost going out of their way to push it over the brink; after all, they got the unit on a free, no-holds barred test interval. They also lost the rubber hood that sits on top of the upper burr assembly.
So - the Technivorm gets a vigorous 2 thumbs up for resisting hard use. The Virtuoso gets conditional 2 thumbs up with some small concerns.
Keeping in mind that both units were being used way more often that prescribed.Colin is the Senior editor and creator of the CoffeeCrew.Com Website

For espresso I'd even say an hour is WAY too long. It should go from the grinder to the pf. After 30 seconds I consider my espresso old and dump it. There's just too many chemical changes happening...

Ditch the pre-ground coffee and grind it yourself.
Your espresso is never going to be right if you use pre-ground.
