Manual grinder - 2005/11/29 11:31
What's the word about manual grinders? There's a few available in the 50-100$ range. Just wondering if they are any better than 100$ electric grinders.

The most often recommended manual grinders are the Zassenhaus line.
These grinders tend to do a much better job at grinding at finer levels - for espresso rather than for drip. At coarser levels there are complaints that the burrs grind more unevenly.
For just a bit more money you might consider the electric Solis Maestro grinder. Check out the "Our picks" link on our home page for equipment recommendations.

The plans are changing. I was to buy a decent wide range grinder for both espresso and drip (I was lookin' at the Maximo, same as La Pavoni PG), but I just learned that my parents bough a grinder for my g/f. Obviously they did not buy something that would do the job for espresso, so I can get a grinder exclusively for espresso. So I'll get an hand mill.
Just wondering if there's any online store where to get a Zassenhaus in Canada.

I've never dealt with either of these vendors, but ..
Ashton Green in Ottawa sells some of the Zassenhaus grinders (see http://www.ashtongreen.com/product.dhtml?prod=T300&pres=1 ). However, the last I looked they no longer sold the turkish model which was often suggested for espresso use.
Merchants of Green Coffee in Toronto sell them as well, including the turkish grinder (this one looks different, having a classic turkish cylinder setup, like a pepper grinder in shape with a grounds container on the bottom). Good chunk of change for a manual grinder ... Very good quality and I understand that they come with a 10-year warranty(?)
Failing that, I came across a comment suggesting that Alistair Hopkin (Elysian Room, Vancouver) may have been selling them at one point.

Ashton Green got the Knee mill (the one I want) backordered 'til april. About Merchants of green Coffee, well they sell the same for 120$ instead of 80$.
Looks like Zassenhaus under estimated the need for Christmas, even US online stores got 'em on back order.
