Why not walk to Cook Street village and stick your head in Bubby Roses Bakery?
They do not do doughnuts -- but everything else..
Lemme think about this.. right downtown huh?

Re:downtown doughnuts - 2006/03/11 02:08Yeah, Colin, it must be downtown because my mother is semi-disabled, and she can't walk far, but she loves her coffee big-time, and has a thing for doughnuts too
We live by the courthouse.
I'll definitely be popping in to Bubby Roses bakery! But, if you can think of a source for doughnuts downtown, I'd be ever so grateful! And, I take it you recommend that "Causeway" coffee as something to grab while I'm in Cook Street Village too, eh?
By the way, I just found this site a few hours ago so haven't had time to read the whole thing, but I'm very favourably impressed with what I've seen so far, Colin!!

Re:downtown doughnuts - 2006/03/12 02:28Hey! Thanks Cath! We do our best here.
There is a German bakery on Fort Street (700 Block) that is worth a look... and the Dutch Bakery..
Doughnuts? I know they are out there -- there is a place downtown that makes fresh doughnuts -- and I am wracking my brain.
Let me research this a bit - if anyone else knows, please chime in.
Colin
PS: Yes - the Cafe Fantastico coffee in the Cook Street village is currently holding its own as the "Best in the Village"Colin is the Senior editor and creator of the CoffeeCrew.Com Website

Re:downtown doughnuts - 2006/03/16 02:41The Dutch bakery is the only place I can think of that has good donuts downtown. They are between Vancouver and Cook...I think

How they do that - they do not have a deep fryer... ah - that I know of.. Ok - I stand corrected...
I still have not figured out where you can get good doughnuts downtown. There is no Tim's downtown -- but that is OK.. as their d-nuts are pure crap.

Re:downtown doughnuts - 2006/03/23 02:06I totally affirm Cathryn's mom's vision: coffee and doughnuts is a great Canadian tradition. As Coffeecrew is clearly devoted to "doing coffee right", hopefully we can spare a moment to try and do donoughts rights as well. Unfortunately, I must also affirm Colin's view of the current doughnuts offered by Tim Horton's. They used to be quite good when they were all baked in-house, but for the last few years they have prepared them centrally (in a huge factory in Brantford, Ontario) and shipped them out frozen to the franchises. It was this action that led the original owner of Tim's, Ron Joyce, to sell his remaining interest in the business. I remember at the time, he simply said "The slogan of Tim Horton's is 'Always Fresh', and somehow this just doesn't strike me as being always fresh". No one could have said it better.
Colin, I suggest you make part of your summer tour trying to find the best doughnuts in each of the communities you are visiting. I will try to do some early field work here in Ottawa for you.
Thanks as always for having such a cool site.

Re:downtown doughnuts - 2006/03/23 03:33OK...Its been awhile since I've been there and they had donuts then. hmmmm I guess on my lunch time walks..I will have to check and see whom has donuts in the downtown area.
the sad part is, the chances of finding a place with good donuts AND coffee are very very slim.
I'll keep you updated.

Re:downtown doughnuts - 2006/03/23 06:29I had the World's most unimaginably bad cup of coffee at Tim Horton's yesterday.
It was hot brown water with vitually no essense of body, aroma or taste.
I cannot believe that I paid $1.50 for this swill.
Simply atrocious!Colin is the Senior editor and creator of the CoffeeCrew.Com Website

Could bad taste come for poor maintenance?
Heck yes! It is the cause of 99% of taste problems with espresso coffee (all other mechanical things being normal and the coffee being fresh...)

Hi,
I've had my Mokita for 5 years now, and I find the coffee is getting kind of bitter - sour, and there is almost no more crema. At first, I thought it was the coffee itself, but now I doubt it....
Pouring the espresso into the hot water, saves the crema.... I have has this request a few times, as for taste difference, I do not know if it does....
As opposed to the other way around? Do you mean the difference between pouring the water over the espresso as opposed to pouring the espresso over the hot water?
If so the only real difference, in...
