Re:Cafe culture in Victoria, B.C. - 2007/04/14 20:00I love the coffee beans at Cafe Fantastico....
that said, I have not purchased a beverage or anything even remotely unique to "me" in... what seems like a couple of years.
It is just not worth it for the attitude you get.
I had one of the staff screeching at me one afternoon -- granted I had kind of brought it on myself after buying a bag of "CAF" coffee and 1/2-CAF when they refused to sell me the same blend I had been buying for the previous 3 years!
I re-bagged it at the counter and the gal behind the counter went totally ballistic on me. We laughed it off after.
The problem at CF is. There are some really self-important people there (a very few) and some very normal staff... and the normal staff just whistle and roll their eyes when a staff member goes OFF on someone.
And dont get me started on Ryan. He is one of the smartest people in the business but does not appear to have a clue about the people he has hired.
As one other local guru reminded me:
"Ya gotta let these cafes do their thing... they are trying to make a living here.. If you dont like ONE cafe, then walk to the next one..."
Despite his bombastic approach to coffee, he is right. If you dont like the Nazi's at CF... move on.

You need to keep in mind the actual number of people that still buy espresso pre-ground and in (shield your eyes!) brick packs!
Yes, it is pretty nasty ass - but this is what people do.

For espresso I'd even say an hour is WAY too long. It should go from the grinder to the pf. After 30 seconds I consider my espresso old and dump it. There's just too many chemical changes happening...
GROUND coffee is fresh for about an hour.
Ditch the pre-ground coffee and grind it yourself.
Your espresso is never going to be right if you use pre-ground.
Sad reality....
Milano claims one of the only 11 bean blends for espresso. Colin, any tasting thoughts on their beans? The opening claims live music and 7 different blends to taste from 3 full bars running! The machi...
yes the espresso is preground, but in the store in front of me. I keep it in an airtight container (mason jar) I don't think I'm getting the same taste from my stovetop machine. I'm hoping that some u...
Vancouver's first Espresso tasting lounge and cafe ...
Really?
And the Elysian Room, JJ Bean or 49th Parallel are not espresso tasting lounges too? ;-)
Looking fwd to this newbie....
Even Winnipeg is entering the realm of better coffee - Good thing. When you think about those cold winter days and bracing winds; nothing warms you up like a great cup of coffee....
Any operating instructions for any similar pump powered espresso machine will get you in the groove - other than the placement of buttons, they are all the same.
I have a Proteo Grande right here o...
