Re:Recommendations on New Machine (Upgrading) - 2008/01/28 13:18 First the disclaimers: I'm an espresso noob and I don't have any hands-on experience with any of the machines you mentioned. My opinion/thoughts come only from the research and reading I've done.

I don't think going from the SL-70 to the Silvia is really moving to a 'next-tier' machine. The user comments/reviews I've seen indicate with an unpressurized portafilter the SL-70 produces espresso equal to what you can get from a Silvia.

I'd suggest that you keep your SL-70, get an unpressurized portafilter (if you don't already have one) and get a better grinder. The universal mantra on all espresso sites is get the best grinder you can afford. I know you want to keep your Maestro, and as a fellow Maestro owner I understand, but the popular opinion is that the Maestro is not a 'real' espresso grinder. It can however be kept as it is a great grinder for other types of coffee preparation, i.e. drip, moka, french press.

The sky is the limit on the amount you can spend on a grinder, but the Rancilio Rocky is very popular and costs around $310. Moving up to the $500 (or more) category the popular choices are the Macap M4 and Mazzer Mini.
