I spend a lot of time in cafes... of all shapes and sizes. I also work on a University campus - that has numerous cafes and lounges.
And there is a common list of ingredients in University, College and City Cafes:
Hot coffee. Students. And expensive lap-top computers. |

I have been asked to cook up a users guide for the Rancilio Silvia espresso machine.
And although I am not currently in possession of one, I still believe it is the single best machine under 1000$. Those who have one will agree. Those who have given theirs up (for whatever reason) and I regretably include myself in that group, will attest to its reliability and longevity and the foolhardyness of letting a machine such as this slip from their hands.
Anyway. Enough crying on my part!
The Rancilio Silvia espresso machine is a legend among kitchen appliances. In over 14 years of snooping out kitchen coffee appliances, the Rancilio Silvia espresso machine is the one unit that everyone, knowledgeable or not, recognizes; for its quality, for its longevity, for its visual appeal and for its unfailing ability to take a handful of ground coffee beans and produce cafe quality espresso time and time again.

Pour yourself another cup! It's part two!
I get asked: "Colin, what is your favorite method of brewing coffee?"
Drip coffee. No question. There is nothing more tasty than a fresh single origin coffee brewed with a paper filter and a Number-4 Melitta filter holder.
What's a single origin coffee, you ask?
Although not a precise interpretation, we can often think of coffees like Sumatra Mandheling, Kenya AA, Guatemalan Antigua and Costa Rican Tarazzu as good examples of single origin coffees. One kind of coffee from one region, CO-OP or Farm... as opposed to Blends. Espresso coffees are almost always a blend of coffees from around the World. And what the coffee vendor is looking for is something that takes advantage of the various attributes of various beans. You will find lots of coffee roasters, large or small, that offer signature blends - to kind of stand out from the rest of the pack - as well as other reasons. Do yourself a favor: If you are a budding coffee nut, stick to single origin coffees - make it a process of exploration. Learn what all the single-origins have to offer and then (and only then) start to explore the art of the Blend! |
