It is said that animal behavior is often a good indicator of strange goings on, disturbances in the force if you would. Judging by recent and unexpected events, the month of May has been one I will not soon forget. So, if this theory has merit, then I should have seen something out of the ordinary in my environment. I have not. I spend my days on a University campus where rabbits run free and, at least during this time of year, the student frontier is more like a beach in Southern France than a true centre of advanced learning. Today, for instance, the temperatures on the west coast of North America will top 90 degrees, that is 30-something for us fans of the Celcius scale. If you are a rabbit, this means hot. If you are a rabbit and the weather is hot and the grass is green then this means it is time to keep the species alive and flourishing. The advantage of the university campus where I work is - It is a gigantic salad bar for the little four-legged critters. There are lots of green spaces, lawns, flower beds, hedges, and trees. There are no natural predators to rabbits on this campus. Well, unless you count the odd Deer that wanders through or the often foolish dog owner that thinks it is funny and good for his pooch to chase through Rose beds after a significantly faster and smaller creature. I digress. Today it is hot and the walk to the campus espresso joint will be interspersed with watching for baby bunnies crossing the garden pathes as they dive for the protective bunker of safety that lies beneath these carefully sculpted flower beds. Campus espresso central is not unlike the world the bunnies live in, especially on a day like today. As if overnight, sales of lattes, cappuccinos and hot coffee vanish only to be replaced with frosty iced drinks that, one would think, should quench the heat of the day. Young people dart in and out with alarming regularity. My cafe is more like a cabana if the lack of clothing is any indication. Truth be told, and please do not tell anyone, but there is beach-front within 2 km (less than one mile) of the University campus. While this is not Southern Califoria (we are North of Seattle --and ah, in Canada) we have many, many pleasant days in the spring and summer. Anyway, when the weather gets hot, peoples thoughts turn to something other than books and lecture halls.
In my world, I like to watch the trends. The bunnies hop and bop across a green campus. Expectant bunny parents dig deep burrows into the soft and professionally tilled soil of the garden borders and under shrubs. Young humans, their books put aside for a moment, dress for each other and on days like today, drink cool and refreshing drinks that would, a few monthes ago, seem totally out of place. So, although this month has been unusual, at least for me, life and the beginning of life has gone on without interuption.
Colin lives and works in Victoria, B.C. Canada and finds the changes of season a fascinating mosaic of life and rebirth.. oh yeah, and hot, hot coffee...
