Three Mom Day |

For me, my mom had everything to do with, at least, some aspects of my passion for coffee. It was more than 25 years ago that she whipped up hot and bitter cups of miserably cheap brew in an aluminum percolator. Okay, a little more than 25 years, but who's counting!?
My other mom, my mother-in-law, hates coffee. She eschews coffee. She rejects it as any decent English woman should and embraces tea as her hot beverage and caffeine delivery vehicle of choice. To further her point, she keeps a brick of 20 year old coffee profoundly frozen in the top of her fridge... Why? To make a point of course.
Mom number three? Well, I just met her today for the first time. This was a first meeting after 40 plus years. She is my God-mom; You know, the spiritual replacement Mom in the event of an unexpected disaster befalling my living Mom, the stand-by Mom, the understudy Mom, Mom-light.
I know my God-mom comes to town once a year and has for the last 5 years running. It was high time I met Mom number three. So today, it would turn out to be a three Mom day.
Three Mom Day...
Those of you under the age of 35 might mumble: "Colin, wasn't that a band from the early seventies?" No. No, that was Three Dog Night. No relation to my three Mom's thank you very much.
Okay, so I don't really have three Mom's? Like, who does?
Still, I have been functioning on two for a good 11 years now... All you need is two. I have two perfectly good kidneys. A third would be, what, excessive!?
I digress.
Anyone that would stick their neck out 40 years ago and offer to replace Mother number one is okay by me. And with this, comes a modicum of social obligations.
It was not without a certain measure of trepidation that I drove, with my loving and understanding wife (and provider of Mom numero dos), to Mom's place (not the cafe) for tea, scones and, ah, Mom-Number-Three.
What to expect? What to expect?
Turns out Mom number three was really cool and thankfully, very talkative, voluble, and replete with many historic short-stories and anecdotes about Montreal in the forties and fifties. Additionally, with all the early history of Mom number one there was little small talk left to me.
This is good.
Two things: Number one - As part of the show and tell of uniting a "mom" and her god-son, my mom polished up my silver and copper-bottomed baby cup that god mom provided me on my birth. She shined it up and put it on the dining-room table while we sipped tea. Mom three, or God-mom observed that I had grown into a very tall, and quite presentable, man and a silver-copper cup would be of little use to me after all these years.
My wife took a quick look at it and pronounced, "Coffee!" "Coffee", my God-mom replied, "In that little cup?" "Espresso", I said. "This would be perfect for espresso..." God-mom injected, "I had espresso once... Do you like espresso?"
I said, "Ah, I have had espresso a couple of times..."
Thing number two: My mom and god-mom grew up in Old Montreal not far from where the Atwater market stands to this very day. They would shop there from time to time; for good food... and great coffee.
Lady number one, in the coffeecrew, Sara makes a bee-line for the Atwater Market whenever she is in Montreal. She goes with her son to hockey games. So, she is a mom. You might call her the coffeecrew mom. Yea. Mom number four. Now that is another story.
Back to god-mom for a moment: "Would you describe yourself as a tea drinker or a coffee drinker", I ask? "I would call myself a coffee drinker", god-mother reflects.
A Coffee drinker. Fitting. Good answer.
Colin has been writing for his website, coffeecrew.com, for over ten years ago. Almost 30 years ago, he picked up his first cup of coffee and has never looked back. Thanks Mom.
