In almost 15 years of writing about specialty coffee, I used to think that I would have been better off writing about something else; like expensive cars... or space travel... or 5-star hotels.
Because, the way I see it, for the last 10 years or so, there have been no shortage of equipment manufa...
Henry Ford did not invent the automobile. Nor was he a member of the braintrust behind the assembly line. He did, however, change the world by employing an assembly line methodology to produce cars - cars which could be within reach of the average American family. From 1909 til its retiremen...
In 15 years of playing with an endless variety of coffee machines, I viewed, with much suspicion the appearance of the POD machine.
Here is the deal. Having grown up with god awful coffee - coffee whose taste I largely attributed to its freshness and my ability to prepare it in an ideal enviro...

I can't say this event was the first time I had coffee, but it is one that I can still remember vividly. I was about 10 years old and it was a weekday morning.
For some reason or another my Dad...

July 2, 2009 - Thursday - Happy CANADA Day! We review OTTO, Review the Gaggia DOSE
Written by Colin Newell
Coffee. Espresso. Cappuccino. Latte. These are magic words for over 1/2 the population of the planet Earth. For 500 years, this hot beverage has been the most popular method of caffeine consumption. Coffee is, after all, the number two most popular item of trade (next to oil). It employs millions of families, some in less than ideal working and living conditions.
June Coffeecrew Podcast - - 20 minutes - Coffee Talk with Poul Mark of Transcend Coffee, Edmonton, Alberta - Canada
Colin Newell, of Victoria B.C. Canada created this website to educate and inform; to help you, the readers, have a better specialty coffee experience at home or in the office. Have a question? Send us an e-mail. Now you might find a more popular coffee website on the net... that is true. But you will not find a sexier coffee themed website!
There are 3 big things that make managing a coffee themed website great: One of them is the trust the readers place in me and my sometimes scattered opinions. And the 2nd thing is the trust that manufacturers and vendors place in the CoffeeCrew website to evaluate great pieces of equipment and review them fairly. The 3rd thing is watching product in development - seeing the actual evolution of a design and following it through its childhood to maturity. The Baratza Vario is an awesome example of this. I have been acquainted with Kyra and Kyle of Baratza Coffee for a few years now - and actually being permitted to watch the evolution of a grinder - from paper to production... is an honor and a truly humbling experience. In an up and coming review of the Baratza Vario grinder, once again we will pull out all the stops. Stay tuned. May-June 2009 is CoffeeCrew.Com relaunch month! All of our sponsors have lined up with boxes of great gifts for giveaway!
Regular forum poster Guy T. from Alberta is the lucky winner of a Bellman CX-25 Cappuccino machine - as well as some other goodies. I am going to go through the forum stats for popular posters and pick out some more winners for T-shirts and Aeropress coffee makers.
Our top prize: A brand new OTTO espresso maker should arrive on these shores in a month or so. If you think you should have OTTO, send me an e-mail - with a short story (400-500 words - in your own words) explaining how specialty coffee has changed your life. If you do not like to write, consider sending me a 5 minute audio snippet in MP3 format - for inclusion in a podcast - This contest will end on July 30, 2009 - so get your entries in now! Send your written entries to my e-mail - cafe - @ - Islandnet - DOT - com

Coffeecrew.com is a non-commercial resource - this means we make commercial recommendations but we do NOT sell anything. Introducing you to new and classic methods of brewing coffee, espresso and other specialty coffee beverages and, at the same time, raising your level of awareness on how this marvelous bean makes its way from the farmers field to your cup.
This website is an educational resource for consumers of specialty coffee. In between all the tutorials and gear reviews, we try to get in one important message: That cup of coffee you are about to enjoy had a long journey from the farmers fields to your cup. Thanks to the advent of the internet, coffee can now have a more meaningful journey to your cafe or home - and benefit the farms and coops even more - cutting out the middle man.
In fact, the average bean changes hands about 100 times before it makes its way into your double-tall decaf latte. 12 - 15 million families work, often under adverse conditions and low pay, to get you your daily fix. Keep that in mind as you take your first sips of the day.So. Welcome to the least commercial coffee and espresso website on the net, guaranteed! We have a few suggested vendors (who have a time honored track record of customer support) who have given us, pretty much, open access to their inventory. If you are wondering, this is a not-for-profit consumer resource for coffee drinkers. We take in just enough ad revenue to just barely cover hosting expenses so, no - and we do not sell anything.
